Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity to join a growing, boutique alternative investment management firm as a Director, Investment Accounting and Operations. This is an upper-middle management role that will lead the investment accounting for the firm's funds (shadow NAVs and reconciliations) and SPV investment entities (primary NAV and reconciliations), maintain the firm's investment infrastructure (brokerage accounts, etc.) and act as the firm's lead financial officer (accounting for the firm and managing payments). In addition, the candidate will act as liaison with certain of the firm's key stakeholders, including fund administrators, auditors, tax advisors and independent board directors.

Best suited to a candidate with an accounting degree, experience with leading the accounting or auditing of investment firm and/or investment fund/entity financial accounts is essential. Experience with investment fund operations would be highly advantageous.

Position Description

A new position, the Director of Investment Accounting and Operations will lead the accounting function for the firm and for the firm's investment entities, maintain the firm's investment operational infrastructure, leading the kyc/aml process with investors and on behalf of the firm and investment entities, and leading the investment reporting function.

Supporting this position is an Analyst (non-accountant) and various outsourced resources such as fund administrators for some of the investment entities and a comprehensive portfolio management, accounting and reporting system. It is expected that outsourced bookkeeping services may be contracted to support the accounting function of this role.

To support growth, a realignment of the firm's personnel is occurring, with this position reporting directly to the firm's President. Future advancement exists for this position to develop into either a CFO or COO role.

 

 

Candidate

This position requires an individual with strong time management skills due to the myriad of tasks. The volume of work is believed to be less than full-time at the moment, though the firm's growth will undoubtedly add to this in the future.

The ideal candidate likely has experience at a fund administrator, in-house at an investment management firm, or as an auditor of investment funds. Understanding of public and private investment accounting is essential.

Functional Tasks

  • Oversee and maintain investment accounting, including conducting shadow NAVs and reconciling these against fund administrators and conducting full NAVs for special purpose vehicles that do not have an external administrator;
  • Maintaining portfolio accounting and reporting system, including ensuring accuracy of data, reconciliation of transactions, execution of trade blotter and pre-trade and post-trade compliance functions;
  • Lead the annual audit process for funds and syndicate SPVs;
  • Maintain investment operations infrastructure, including sourcing, evaluating and managing various outsourced resources such as executing brokers, custodians, auditors, and administrators;
  • Pre-trade and post-trade compliance, ensuring adherence to Offering Memoranda, Independent Board requirements, Investment Policy Statements or other governing documents;
  • Report investment performance in a timely and accurate manner;
  • Contribute numerical information to assist with regulatory reporting;
  • Assist with implementation of certain investments, particularly relating to the review and execution of fund investments, such as completion of subscription forms, submission of KYC/AML materials, etc;
  • Lead the KYC/AML function, ensuring that all clients and prospective clients have been subject to best-in-class vetting;
  • Participate in the design and implementation of various investment structures, including domestic feeder funds, offshore investment funds, managed accounts, and other relevant structures; and
  • Lead the accounting function for the firm, including bookkeeping for the firm's operating entities, processing expenses (including payroll), managing the audit, overseeing tax filings and entering wire transactions for approval by the firm's President.

 

Experience and Educational Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree and an accounting designation are required;
  • Education relating to investing, investment accounting or investment reporting would be advantageous;
  • Must have at least 5 years experience undertaking investment accounting or auditing of investment funds;
  • Must have at least 2 years experience with investment operations, including dealings with brokers, custodians, administrators and other service providers;
  • Experience with Global Investment Performance Standards, or similar knowledge of best practices in portfolio performance reporting would be advantageous; and
  • Understanding of listed equities, fixed income, basic derivatives, foreign exchange and unlisted investment products (including open-end funds, closed-end funds, and managed accounts) is required.
